The One Thing You’re Probably Overlooking at Networking Events

You’ve prepared your introduction, have your contact information ready, and mapped out your follow-up strategy. But one overlooked detail could sabotage your networking success before you even say a word: your outfit.

I’ve attended hundreds of networking events, and while I was trained to master the prep, the in-event conversations, and the follow-up, I missed something critical early on—what to wear. Here's how to ensure your presence communicates confidence, approachability, and memorability from the moment you walk into the room:

1. Skip the Black.

Black might feel like the safest choice in your wardrobe, but it can work against you. Its high contrast makes it less inviting, subconsciously signaling unapproachability. Instead, go for softer neutrals like navy, gray, or cream—colors that are professional yet more engaging.

2. Add a Pop of Personality.

Neutral doesn’t mean boring. Include one distinctive element that makes you memorable: a bold tie, a statement necklace, or a unique brooch. These small touches spark conversation and ensure you’re not just another face in the crowd.

3. Be the First to Make It Comfortable.

Networking is uncomfortable for most people—it’s a room full of strangers! Ease the tension by being the one to break the ice. Invite someone to sit beside you, show genuine curiosity about their story, and suggest a follow-up meeting to keep the connection going. Then—most importantly—follow through.

Why This Matters

After years of building record-breaking sales teams and now running my own boutique, I’ve learned that success often lies in the details others overlook. How you show up—literally and figuratively—sends subtle signals about who you are. Attention to detail tells people you’re the kind of person they want to work with, partner with, and trust.

So the next time you prepare for a networking event, don’t just focus on your pitch or your plan. Think about how your presence tells your story before you even say hello. Stand out by showing up thoughtfully—and watch how it transforms your connections.

Now it’s your turn: What’s one detail you’ve overlooked in networking events before? Share it below—I’d love to hear your perspective.
